TLDR: Project Hail Mary is a 2026 science fiction film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace — a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. He slowly pieces together that he is on a solo mission to save humanity from extinction. Then he meets Rocky. That is all I will say. The film has a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes, earned $617 million worldwide, and is now available on digital platforms from May 12, 2026. It is one of the best films of the year. Possibly the decade. Go watch it.
I read Andy Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary in 2021 and it immediately became one of my favourite science fiction books ever written. Not because of the science — although the science is genuinely brilliant. But because of the friendship at its heart. The kind of friendship that should be impossible and is somehow the most human thing in the story.
So when I tell you that this film adaptation not only lived up to the book but in some ways exceeded it, please understand how much weight those words carry.
Project Hail Mary (2026) is a near-perfect film. And I do not say that lightly.

What Is Project Hail Mary About?
Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spacecraft. He does not know where he is. He does not know how he got there. He does not even know his own name at first.
As his memory slowly returns, piece by piece, he starts to understand the situation. He is light years from Earth, alone on a ship called the Hail Mary, orbiting a star called Tau Ceti. His two crewmates are dead.
The reason he is out here? Earth is dying.
A microscopic organism called astrophage has been feeding on the Sun’s energy, causing it to slowly dim. If nothing is done, Earth will freeze within a generation. Tau Ceti is the only nearby star that is not dimming — so someone has to go there and figure out why. That someone turned out to be Grace.
It is a one-way trip. He accepted the mission — though the flashbacks reveal the word “accepted” is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Then, just as things could not get any more impossible, another spacecraft appears.
And inside it is Rocky.
The Cast
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Ryan Gosling | Ryland Grace — middle school science teacher and reluctant space hero |
| James Ortiz | Rocky — the alien, performed via a team of five puppeteers (the “Rockyteers”) |
| Sandra Hüller | Eva Stratt — the government agent who organises Project Hail Mary |
| Ken Leung | Yao Li-Jie — the Chinese commander of the Hail Mary spacecraft |
| Milana Vayntrub | Olesya Ilyukhina — a Russian engineer aboard the Hail Mary |
| Lionel Boyce | Carl — security personnel |
| Malachi Kirby | Martin Dubois — the original scientist assigned to the mission |
| Liz Kingsman | Annie Shapiro — a backup scientist |
| Priya Kansara | Voice of Mary — the ship’s onboard computer |
A fun production note — Meryl Streep recorded an alternate voice for Rocky during post-production. Lord and Miller ultimately kept James Ortiz’s performance because nothing could improve on what he had already done.
Rocky — The Character Everyone Is Talking About
I need to spend some real time on this because Rocky is the reason Project Hail Mary works as emotionally as it does.
Rocky is an alien from a planet in the 40 Eridani A system. He is rock-like, has five legs, “sees” through echolocation, and communicates through musical chords. He is also the sole survivor of his own species’ mission to investigate the same problem Grace is investigating.
They cannot breathe the same air. They cannot touch. Their entire friendship is built through a pressurised ball of xenonite that Rocky uses as a spacesuit, and a machine translation system that Grace builds to interpret Rocky’s chord-like speech.
James Ortiz performed Rocky through practical puppetry on set in every scene with Gosling. By the end of the film, about half of Rocky’s shots are a blend of puppetry and VFX animation. The creature was designed and built by legendary creature designer Neal Scanlan — the same person who brought BB-8 to life in Star Wars.
The result is one of the most convincing, loveable, and emotionally resonant alien characters I have ever seen in a film. Not since E.T. has a non-human character made me feel this much.
Ryan Gosling Is Extraordinary
Ryan Gosling spent years on this project — he is also a producer — and every frame of that commitment shows.
What makes his performance work is that Ryland Grace is not a hero in the traditional sense. He is a scared, confused, sometimes silly, deeply warm-hearted person who just happens to be the only one left who can save his planet. Gosling plays all of that with a naturalism that makes you forget you are watching a movie.
His best scenes are with Rocky. Two beings from completely different worlds, who should have nothing in common, slowly building a friendship through patience, curiosity, and the shared language of science. Gosling makes you believe every single second of it.
The Hollywood Reporter called it one of the year’s finest performances and said Gosling proves he can have chemistry with a rock. That headline writes itself — and it is also completely true.
USA Today gave the film four out of four stars and called it the first great film of 2026, describing it as the kind of old-school popcorn movie with big ideas that Spielberg and Lucas would have made in their prime.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller
These are the directors of The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Films that look like they should be silly and end up being some of the most emotionally intelligent cinema of their decade.
Project Hail Mary is their live-action peak.
They took a book that is largely one man talking to himself and a set of science problems and made it feel urgent, intimate, warm, and occasionally hilarious. The pacing is extraordinary for a 156-minute film — it never drags. The structure of Grace’s memory returning slowly through flashbacks is one of the best storytelling choices in recent blockbuster filmmaking.
The first cut of the film reportedly ran three hours and forty-five minutes. Lord and Miller screened it for other filmmakers and were told to get it way shorter. They described the feedback session as embarrassing. The final cut at 156 minutes is tight and purposeful — every scene earns its place.
The Technical Craft
Cinematographer Greig Fraser — who won an Oscar for Dune — shot the entire film without any green screen. Not a single shot. Instead, the team built the entire interior of the Hail Mary spacecraft as a practical set. When Gosling needed to be in space outside the ship, he was shot against a black backdrop. The wide exterior shots of the spacecraft were handled digitally by Industrial Light & Magic.
The film was shot using Arri Alexa 65 cameras for IMAX presentations, with a clever switching aspect ratio — the present-day spacecraft scenes use the taller IMAX ratio, while the Earth flashbacks use the wider anamorphic ratio. This is a genuinely beautiful technical choice that most viewers will feel even if they cannot name it.
NASA actively supported the production. Astronaut Kjell Lindgren visited Gosling on set to share real insights about human spaceflight. The science in this film is as accurate as a mainstream blockbuster has ever attempted.

The Music
Daniel Pemberton composed the score — his third collaboration with Lord and Miller after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel. The 38-track score is available digitally.
The film also features some wonderful song choices. “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles. “Two of Us” by the Beatles. “Rainbows” by Dennis Wilson. “Gracias a la vida” sung by Mercedes Sosa. Each song placement feels deliberate and earns its emotional moment.
What the Critics Said
Project Hail Mary currently holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 400 critics — the Rotten Tomatoes consensus describes it as a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart. Metacritic has it at 77 out of 100. CinemaScore audiences gave it an A.
BBC named it one of the best films of 2026 and praised it as an unusual sci-fi blockbuster that is mostly about people using their brains to solve problems.
The San Francisco Chronicle called it a masterpiece of a family popcorn movie with outstanding creature design. The American Prospect said it is one of the rare films that is quite a bit better than the book.
Even the Guardian, which was somewhat mixed overall, acknowledged that Gosling is an effortlessly charming screen player who keeps everything watchable.
The 94% Rotten Tomatoes score tells you almost everything. This film was not just liked. It was loved.
Box Office — A Genuine Blockbuster Hit
Project Hail Mary opened to $80.6 million in the United States alone in its first weekend — Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest debut ever. Worldwide, it earned $141 million in its opening weekend.
By late April 2026, the film had crossed $617 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2026.
The trailer, released in June 2025, accumulated 400 million views globally in its first week — the most viewed trailer for any original (non-franchise) movie in history for its first week of release.
A LEGO Hail Mary spacecraft set was released on March 1, 2026, as part of the LEGO Icons series. The toy existed before I had seen the film. Now I want it very much.
Should You Read the Book First?
If you have time — yes. Andy Weir’s novel is a brilliant, propulsive read that you can finish in a few days. It will give you a deeper appreciation for how faithfully Drew Goddard’s screenplay captures the spirit of the source material while making smart changes for the film medium.
But honestly? The film is so well made that it stands completely on its own. It does not require homework. It welcomes you in and takes care of the rest.

My Final Verdict
Project Hail Mary is the best film I have seen in 2026.
It is funny and moving and smart and visually stunning. It treats its audience as intelligent without being cold or difficult. It tells a story about friendship, sacrifice, and what it means to be human — and it does so through the lens of a man alone in space and a five-legged alien who speaks in musical chords.
Ryan Gosling gives one of the best performances of his career. Rocky is one of the greatest alien characters in the history of cinema. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have made the rare blockbuster that is as emotionally satisfying as it is visually spectacular.
Do not wait for streaming. If it is still showing near you — go see it in IMAX. And if you missed it — the May 12 digital release is your chance to watch something genuinely special.
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars. Perfect.
